Seven people in India’s second most populous state, Maharashtra, reportedly beat 55-year-old Fazal Mohammed Nawab Ali to death with wooden sticks for refusing to withdraw a molestation case registered by his daughter against one of them, local police revealed this week.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) cites Deputy Superintendent of Police Ratnakar Navale as indicating on Monday that “four of the attackers, including Sayyad Sayeed who had allegedly molested the woman, have been arrested while a search is on for the other accused.”

India.com notes:

A 55-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by seven people after he refused to withdraw a molestation case lodged by his daughter against one of them. Police said that four of the attackers including the man who had allegedly molested the woman, have been taken into custody. Meanwhile, a search is on to nab the other accused who are at large.

PTI reports that the man was beaten to death over the weekend.

“On Saturday night, Sayeed and some of his accomplices stopped Ali while he was returning home on his motorcycle in Malegaon and allegedly beat him up severely with wooden sticks,” Police Deputy Superintendent Navale revealed.

On the way to the hospital, Ali succumbed to the serious injuries sustained during the attack, Navale indicated.

Sayeed is accused of molesting the woman back in 2015. The victim reportedly lodged a complaint against him at Pawardi police station, and the case is pending in court.

The police said that Sayeed attempted to pressure Ali to rescind the case, to no avail.

Police charged the attackers with various crimes including murder.

In recent years, sexual crimes against minors in India have soared, increasing five-fold from 18,967 in 2006 to 106,958 in 2016, according to the latest data compiled by the NGO Child Rights and You (CRY).

In April, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration approved the death penalty for rapists of girls under the age of 12.
