May 8 (UPI) — An alligator made a rare visit to a North Carolina town, eliciting a visit from researchers and prompting police to warn residents to “check those pools.”
Kitty Hawk police said the alligator, initially estimated to be 10 to 15 feet long, was first reported Monday swimming through a canal in a residential neighborhood.
Police warned residents to keep an eye on their kids and pets and to “check those pools” for unexpected reptiles.
A team from the Coastal North Carolina Alligator Research happened to be at a local doughnut shop when they heard about the alligator Monday and they paid a visit to the neighborhood.
The team was able to quickly capture the alligator and tag it before setting it free again.
The researchers said in a Facebook post the alligator was actually about 9 1/2 feet long.
