At least 33 children, 3 adults fall ill at Florida summer camp

June 22 (UPI) — Thirty-three children and three adults were hospitalized this week after they became sick at a Florida summer camp in Lake Placid.

Highlands County Fire and Rescue said none of the illnesses were serious and the cause of the illnesses was unclear.

Children from Charlotte, Desoto, Sarasota, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties attended the Clover Leaf 4-H Camp, the rescue team said.

The kids began feeling sick on Wednesday, and crews realized the problem was serious when a child passed out the following day.

Most of the kids were suffering from a range of symptoms, including fevers, nausea and vomiting, WTSP reported.

Heather Kent, the interim associate state 4-H program leader, said nothing of this magnitude had ever happened at the camp.

“We do not know the cause of the illness at this time, and are waiting on a report from the hospital,” Kent said. “Everyone who is ill is receiving quality care.”

The camp hosts nearly 100 children, ranging in age from 8 to 15 years old.
