PORTHCAWL, Wales, April 14 (UPI) — Tourists and residents in Wales made the best of a pair of benches facing opposite a scenic beach by repurposing one as the world’s first “selfie bench.”
Bridgend Tourism Association director Hugh Murray noted that other benches in the area face the water and encouraged tourists in the town of Porthcawl to use the bench’s unique orientation to capture photos of themselves in front of the sea.
“We have a fantastic coastline and when people take a selfie they have this amazing background behind them,” he said.
A spokesman for the council said that one of the benches will be turned around following complaints from a local group.
“Due to the strength of public opinion, we will be changing the direction of one of the benches towards the sea so that visitors have a choice of which view they would prefer to face,” he said.
Porthcawl’s mayor told ITV that he enjoys the novelty of the backward facing bench and hailed them as a genius marketing move.
“I think it deserves 10 out of 10 for that, it was an off the cuff remark I’m sure but suddenly it’s become ‘I thought of that a long time ago.’”
