Camp Fire death toll rises to 86 after man dies from burns

Dec. 12 (UPI) — The death toll in Northern Californ’a Camp Fire rose to 86 when Butte County officials said Tuesday a man had died from burn injuries.

Larry Smith, 80, of Paradise, Calif., was burned while trying to douse the flames that had consumed his car when the fire broke out on Nov. 8, Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea posted on Facebook.

Smith died Nov. 25 at University of Davis Medical Center.

Honea reported 31 of the deaths have been tentatively identified and 52 positively identified. Three remains have not been identified. No remains have been found since Nov. 24.

The number of missing stands at three, after the count was higher than 1,000 at one point.

The deadliest and most destructive fire in California history burned 153,000 acres until it was contained Nov. 25, according to Cal Fire. It destroyed nearly 14,000 homes, 528 commercial buildings and 4,300 other structures.
