Cannes asks Iran to let director Jafar Panahi attend film festival

Paris (France) (AFP) – The Cannes film festival pleaded Thursday with Iran to allow the acclaimed director Jafar Panahi to fly to the festival to show his new film there next month.

The dissident director of “Taxi”, which won the Golden Bear at Berlin three years ago, is banned from leaving the country.

Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux said the French authorities were supporting their plea to Tehran to allow the dissident director show his new film “Three Faces”, and then “let him return home”.

It is one of 17 films in the running for the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
