Washington (AFP) – The Washington Capitals re-signed John Carlson to an eight year, $64 million contract on Sunday that will help maintain the high standards of the Stanley Cup champions’ defence for years to come.
“John has been an exceptional and consistent player for our franchise and has blossomed into one of the top defencemen in the NHL,” Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said.
“Defenceman like John are a rare commodity in our league and, at 28 years of age, we feel he is just entering his prime.
“As a right-handed defenceman, John plays in all key situations and has contributed greatly to our team’s success on the special teams.”
The 28-year-old American had 15 goals and 53 assists in 82 games for the Capitals last season.
Washington drafted Carlson in the first round in 2008. The Massachusetts native has 77 goals and 256 assists in 608 NHL goals, all with the Capitals.
Before his pro career took off, Carlson was best known for scoring the overtime winning goal in a 6-5 victory over Canada in the final of the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
