David Lowery to direct live-action ‘Peter Pan’ for Disney

LOS ANGELES, April 14 (UPI) — Peter Pan is the latest film to get a live-action remake by Disney, and David Lowery has been set to direct.

Lowery will work from a script co-written by Toby Halbrooks based off of the J.M. Barrie classic story, published in 1904. Jim Whitaker is set to produce, according to Deadline.

The project, still in its early stages, is not nearly the first live-action retelling of the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. Steven Spielberg released the star-studded Hook in 1992, P.J. Hogan developed a 2003 version and most recently, Joe Wright’s 2015 flop, Pan, came from Warner Bros.

Peter Pan is just the latest remake coming from Disney. The company’s live-action division is also developing Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cruella De Ville and Malificent 2, among others.

Disney’s retelling of The Jungle Book, starring Neel Sethi, releases in theaters Friday.
