Democrats to vote to reopen US government: Schumer

Washington (AFP) – The US Senate’s top Democrat said Monday his party has reached a deal with majority Republicans on a funding bill to end a partial shutdown of federal government, now in its third day.

“After several discussions, offers, counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement,” Senator Chuck Schumer told the Senate ahead of a key vote.

“We will vote today to reopen the government to continue negotiating a global agreement” on the fate of hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the country as children who are soon to lose their protection from deportation, Schumer said.
