Diogo Dalot: Manchester United signs defender

June 6 (UPI) — Manchester United has announced the signing of Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot.

Dalot, 19, is coming over from FC Porto on a five-year contract, with an option for a sixth year. United agreed to pay Porto $25.4 million for the fullback, according to the BBC and Sky Sports. Dalot completed a physical with the club on Tuesday.

“Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club,” United manager Jose Mourinho said in a release from the club.

“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.”

Dalot made his debut earlier this year in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

“Joining Manchester United is an unbelievable opportunity for me,” Dalot said. “I have grown up in Porto’s Academy and I am so thankful for everything they have done for me. But the chance of coming to the biggest club in the world is something I just couldn’t turn down.”

United has had a busy week in regards to signing new talent. The Premier League power also agreed to a deal this week for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.
