Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan

GAUHATI, India (AP) — The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are visiting the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan at the invitation of its king and queen.

Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, were given a red-carpet welcome on a windy Thursday morning as their jet landed in the picturesque hilltop resort town of Paro. A small boy and girl presented the royal couple with bouquets of flowers.

The British royals are expected to spend the day watching an archery match and later dining with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema, who are wildly popular in the nation of 800,000.

On Friday, they plan to hike to a Buddhist monastery perched at an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 feet).
