May 2 (UPI) — Ty Cobb, the attorney handling President Donald Trump’s response to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is retiring and Emmet Flood is taking his place on the legal team, the White House announced Wednesday.
Cobb will leave the position by the end of May, press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters.
“For several weeks Ty Cobb has been discussing his retirement and last week he let Chief of Staff [John] Kelly know he would retire at the end of this month,” she said.
Cobb has pressed for cooperation between Trump’s legal team and Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign. He is regarded by some as a steadying voice in suggesting that Trump refrain from commenting, via Twitter, about the investigation.
Cobb has also been responsible for turning over relevant documents to the Mueller team and arranging over two dozen interviews between Mueller and White House personnel.
Sanders said Flood will be joining Trump’s legal team against “the Russia witch hunt.”
Flood represented former President Bill Clinton during his impeachment process in the late 1990s.
