Erdogan leads Turkey presidential poll after 20 percent vote count: state media

Istanbul (AFP) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was on Sunday leading tightly-contested presidential elections with almost sixty percent of the vote, state media said, in results based on a 22 percent vote count.

Erdogan has 59.12 percent with his nearest rival Muharrem Ince of the secular Republican People’s Party (CHP) on 26.53 percent. Erdogan needs over 50 percent to retain the presidency in the first round but these are still early results and the outcome could yet change drastically.
