Los Angeles (AFP) – Former Dallas Cowboys star receiver Dez Bryant is headed back to the NFL on a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports and his own Twitter feed.

Bryant was one of several receivers who worked out for the Saints on Tuesday and while no deal has been confirmed by the team, reports said he would be joining the Saints and their prolific quarterback Drew Brees in time to take on his old team on November 29.

Bryant’s Twitter feed on Wednesday featured re-tweets of the news, and his own thanks to messages of congratulations from around the league.

Bryant, who turned 30 on Sunday, hasn’t played in an NFL game since January 1, when the Cowboys finished the 2017 season against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys released Bryant on April 13, a split the player called “personal” and not his choice.

Bryant caught 531 passes for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns with the Cowboys since Dallas made him a first-round selection, 24th overall, in the 2010 NFL Draft.

In New Orleans, he’ll be another target for Brees, who this year overtook Peyton Manning at the top of the NFL’s all-time passing yardage standings.

The Saints are 7-1, having just handed the Los Angeles Rams their first defeat of the season on Sunday.

Jason Garrett, coach of the 3-5 Cowboys, offered congratulations to Bryant on Wednesday when speaking to reporters.

“Dez is a great player,” Garrett said. “Dez was a great player in this organization for a long time. I’m really happy for him and that opportunity. I know it’s important to him. He wants to finish his career strong.”
