Nov. 12 (UPI) — Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott showed why he was a state champion hurdler during a Week 10 win against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The former Missouri 110m hurdling king took flight in the second quarter of the Cowboys’ 27-10 NFC East triumph on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Dallas faced a 2nd and 10 on the play from the Eagles’ 40-yard-line.

Elliott took a handoff to the left side of Dak Prescott and bolted through a hole through the left side of the Cowboys’ offensive line. He raced through space, passing the first down marker before approaching Eagles safety Tre Sullivan.

The Eagle’ 6-foot defender ducked down to hit Elliott, but found only air as the Cowboys star jumped over him at the 25-yard-line. Elliott continued his sprint until falling down inside the 10-yard-line on the 32-yard run. The Cowboys completed the drive with a 31-yard Brett Maher field goal, taking a 6-0 lead.

After the game Elliott, reporters asked Elliott if that was the best in-game hurdle of his career.

“I don’t know. I’ll leave that up to you guys,” said Elliott, who was a Missouri state champion at the 100m and 300m events.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones heaped praise on Elliott in his postgame comments.

“We’ve seen him make that move before,” Jones said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him totally clear [a defender] like on that one. He’s phenomenal. Everybody understands that and says what an athlete he is. But he also is a competitor.”

Elliott was the best offensive player on the field during the Cowboys’ victory, running for 151 yards and a score on 19 carries and bringing in six catches for 36 yards and a score.

Elliott has 831 yards and four scores on 168 carries this season. He also has 35 receptions for 262 yards and two scores on a career-high 35 catches.
