May 27 (UPI) — Las Vegas casinos began preparing Wednesday to reopen after Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak gave them the go-ahead as part of his plan to restart the state economy.

Sisolak said Tuesday night casinos throughout Nevada can reopen on June 4 as part of the second phase of his revival plan.

“I have informed the chair of the Gaming Control Board that I feel confident in the June 4 target date,” he said.

Under the plan, other non-essential businesses including movie theaters, bowling alleys and indoor malls can reopen Friday and gatherings can increase from 10 to 50 people.

The closure of Nevada’s casinos has severely affected the state’s tourism-dependent economy. Nevada had the nation’s highest unemployment rate last month, 28.2 percent.

Three of the gaming industry’s largest casino operators — MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Boyd Gaming — said last week they’d started testing tens of thousands of casino workers to prepare for reopening.

Caesars said last week it planned to resume operations at Caesars Palace and the Flamingo Las Vegas whenever the state allowed it to do so.
