Manchester City’s Jesus breaks Southampton hearts with stoppage time winner

May 13 (UPI) — Gabriel Jesus netted a score in stoppage time in Manchester City’s 1-0 win against Southampton Sunday at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England.

City and Southampton played 90 minutes of scoreless soccer in the Premier League affair before Jesus threatened. Kevin De Bruyne sent a long feed into the box toward Jesus in the 93rd minute on the play.

Jesus sped past the Southampton defense and slammed the feed to a stop with his left foot. He drove into the box and used his right boot to shoot the ball off of a bounce. His attempt looped over Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy and into the far post netting.

“Obviously I’m very happy scoring in the last minute of a game that was nil-nil,” Jesus told ManCity.com. “It’s amazing. Winning that way is exciting.”

City also reached a Premier League record 100 points on the season. The squad also set marks with 32 wins, 16 away wins, 18 successive wins, 106 goals, a goal differential of +79 and a 19 point gap ahead of second place.

“It was beautiful,” De Bruyne said. “To have 100 points is unbelievable. We tried everything and we had to wait until the last second! It was a very emotional end to the season.”

City’s next match isn’t until July, when the squad battles Borussia Dortmund in an International Champions Cup match at 9 p.m. on July 20 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.
