Marco Asensio: Real Madrid midfielder agrees to contract extension

Sept. 28 (UPI) — La Liga power Real Madrid has signed Marco Asensio and Raphael Varane to contract extensions.

Madrid announced the Varane deal on Wednesday and the Asensio contract on Thursday.

“Real Madrid C. F. and Asensio have agreed an extension to the player’s contract, binding him to the club until the 30th of June 2023,” the club said in a news release.

“Tomorrow, Friday, at 2:00pm CEST, Asensio will appear at a press conference in the media room at the Santiago Bernabéu.”

Asensio, 21, has five goals and an assist in 11 games this year for Madrid. He also had three goals and an assist this year for Spain’s U21 squad.

Asensio’s new contract includes a buy-out clause worth more than $820 million, according to AS.

“Varane has signed his contract extension with Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabéu board room accompanied by club president Florentino Pérez,” Madrid said in a news release Thursday. “The defender will remain at the club until 30th June 2022.. After signing, he received a replica of the Cibeles fountain and a shirt with his name and the number 2022 on the back.”

Varane’s contract was set to expire in June of 2020. He joined Madrid in 2011 from Lens. The 24-year-old has won three Champions League titles and two La Liga titles.
