June 14 (UPI) — Mexico issued warnings as Tropical Storm Bud neared landfall in Cabo San Lucas on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.
The center of the storm — which reached Category 4 as a hurricane earlier in the week — was about 30 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, the NHC said in its 6 p.m. MDT update. Bud was packing 45 mph winds and moving north-northwest at 7 mph.
The Mexican government issued a tropical storm warning for Santa Fe to La Paz, Mexico, including Cabo San Lucas. There also was a tropical storm watch for La Paz to San Evaristo, and from Altata to Huatabampito.
The NHC expects the storm to move across southern Baja California Sur Thursday night and over the Gulf of California on Friday. Later Friday, it was expected to move over mainland Mexico then dissipate.
It is expected to deliver 2 inches to 6 inches of rain across portions of Baja California Sur, and southern and eastern Sonora in northwestern Mexico through Saturday. The storm could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
Bud also could cause life-threatening swells along portions of the southwestern coast of Mexico and western mainland Mexico.
Bud is the second major hurricane to develop in the eastern Pacific this year, following Hurricane Aletta last week. Aletta weakened to a remnant low on Monday.
Bud’s intensity marked the third time on record the first two named Pacific storms of the season became major hurricanes.
