Sept. 27 (UPI) — The Denver Nuggets and standout forward Michael Porter Jr. have reached an agreement on a five-year designated maximum contract extension.
League sources told ESPN and the Denver Post on Monday that Porter’s extension could be worth up to $207 million. According to the outlets, the deal is worth the five-year rookie max of $172 million, but the pact can reach that $207 million figure if he makes one of the three All-NBA teams this season.
The agreement is the fourth maximum rookie contract extension given out this off-season, with Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander previously receiving max deals.
The deal with Porter means the Nuggets’ top four players — reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Porter — are all signed to long-term contracts.
The Nuggets selected Porter with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of the University of Missouri. He missed the entire 2018-19 season after undergoing back surgery shortly after the team drafted him.
Porter returned to the court for his rookie season in the 2019-20 campaign and averaged 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds over 55 games (eight starts). He followed up that year by averaging 19 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists over 61 games in a starting role for the Nuggets last season.
The 23-year-old Porter has averaged 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds across 116 career games with the Nuggets.
