KEARNEY, Mo., April 13 (UPI) — A pair of police officers in Missouri climbed down a storm drain to rescue a baby fox that had become trapped.
The Kearney, Mo., police department shared video of the rescue, which saw the officers travel 150 feet into the sewer system to free the trapped animal.
“Sgt. Kantola entered the storm drain, but the fox went further into the drainage system,” police explained in a separate Facebook post. “Officer Garton entered the drain at a different location to prevent the fox from going any further.”
Kantola told ABC News that he assumed a dog was trapped in the storm drain when he first heard reports of noises coming from the area.
“I thought it was a puppy at first,” he said. “But I went down to the other end of the cul de sac, where the noises sounded louder. I looked down and there it was, a baby fox.”
Police also shared video of the fox after the rescue, where it was wrapped in a towel and began to recover from the trauma of being trapped in the drain.
“The little guy was very tired, wet, shivering,” Kantola said. “He was probably exhausted. I’m sure he wouldn’t have lasted very long. It was very cold, it had rained the other night and the little guy hadn’t gotten anything to eat down there.”
After being rescued, the fox was taken to an animal rescue facility where it was to be rehabilitated before being returned to the wild.
