Washington (AFP) – Washington pitcher Max Scherzer returned from the injured list Thursday, striking out three in four innings in the Nationals’ 7-1 win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Scherzer allowed four hits — including a home run by Adam Frazier on a one-out fastball in the third inning.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, was placed on the injured list on July 26 with an upper back strain.

A day earlier he pitched five innings against the Colorado Rockies in his return from a back injury that had caused him to miss the All-Star Game.

On Thursday he threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes, and departed the game with the Nationals leading 2-1.

They improved to 70-57 and lead the National League wild card race.
