New York (AFP) – Darrelle Revis, a cornerback who spent 11 seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, announced his retirement from the league Wednesday.

Four days after his 33rd birthday, the “shut-down corner” who was known for isolating star receivers on “Revis Island” called it quits after a career that included seven Pro Bowl appearances and a 2015 Super Bowl title with the Patriots over Seattle.

“I am closing a chapter in my life that I once dreamed of as a kid and I am officially retiring from the NFL,” Revis wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

“The game of football has opened doors for me I once thought were nearly impossible to get through. My passion to play the game at an elite level brought fun and excitement to the term ‘Shutdown Corner’ which was very nearly on the verge of extinction.

“Covering some of the toughest assignments in league history was a challenge every Sunday but also an honor.”

He closed by saying, “Long live Revis Island.”

Revis made 497 tackles, 29 interceptions, forced six fumbles, deflected 140 passes and made two quarterback sacks in 145 career NFL appearances for the Patriots, New York Jets, Tampa Bay and Kansas City.

He signed a two-year deal with Kansas City last year but was released this past february after playing only six times for the Chiefs.
