Paris police negotiate with ‘violent’ man in hostage standoff

June 12 (UPI) — A man who said he was armed with a firearm and a bomb took three hostages Tuesday at a building in northern Paris, French police said.

Police described the hostage taker as “determined and violent,” though they could not confirm whether he was indeed armed.

The man told police he had an accomplice outside of the building in the 10th arrondissement.

French special forces are negotiating with the suspect, and said he asked to speak with the Iranian Embassy in Paris. Officials said the incident does not appear to be terror-related.

Yves Lefebvre, a police union spokesman, told Britain’s The Telegraph that at least one hostage had a head injury.

Law enforcement sealed off the streets surrounding the building and prohibited children from leaving nearby schools. The man entered the building around 4 p.m., pretending to be a food delivery man.

The building includes office spaces as well as residential apartments.
