June 12 (UPI) — Australian actor and star of the Crocodile Dundee film series Paul Hogan will star as himself in the feature film, The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.
The new film will be shot in Australia, Los Angeles and Vancouver, with production starting next month.
The Dundee film series has gained renewed attention after Hogan appeared in a short film that appeared to be a trailer for a new film in the series with the title Dundee-The Son of a Legend Returns Home, but turned out to be an advertisement for Tourism Australia in a Super Bowl commercial.
Hogan started his career in his own sketch comedy show, The Paul Hogan Show, before he gained international recognition as star of the Crocodile Dundee film series which debuted in 1986.
In The Very Excellent Mr Dundee, Hogan will play a semi-fictional version of himself.
“Don’t do anything to mess this up,” his manager tells him, Variety reported, as his character is on the verge of receiving a Knighthood:for services to comedy in the film. This becomes easier said then done as he battles to protect his reputation over a six-week period.
The film’s director is Dean Murphy, who also directed Charlie and Boots and Strange Bedfellows.
KMI’s Kathy Morgan, Christopher Figg and Robert Whitehouse from London’s Piccadilly Pictures, Sherman Ng from Singapore’s Salt Media and Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten from Transmission Films are the executive producers. Fulcrum Media Finance and other equity partners financed the film.
The supporting cast has not been announced yet.
“Watch this space as I’ve been honored to have many of my friends and colleagues, whose work I adore, agree to join us for this hilarious new adventure,” Hogan said in a statement to Variety.
The 1986 Crocodile Dundee film is the still the top-grossing Australian film ever, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Hogan also starred in a 1988 and 2001 sequel film in the series.
