Police: Alabama officer shot, suspect dead following chase

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama authorities say a Florence police officer has been shot and the suspect has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

Capt. Mike Holt tells The Associated Press that the officer was shot in the face just after midnight Sunday during a traffic stop at Cox Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Road. Holt says the officer was transported to Huntsville Hospital where his condition wasn’t immediately known. Police are withholding the names of the officer and suspect, pending notification of family.

Holt says officers spotted the suspect traveling in a vehicle just after 1 a.m. and a short chase ensued. The suspect stopped at a church parking lot, fled into a utility trailer and shot at least once at officers.

Holt says the suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
