Nov. 16 (UPI) — Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman has died in New York at the age of 87.
Goldman penned the scripts for the classic films Misery, The Princess Bride, All The President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Deadline.com said Friday the author was surrounded by family and friends when he died at his Manhattan home after months of declining health.
His daughter Jenny told The Washington Post the cause of his death was complications from colon cancer and pneumonia.
“The great William Goldman, my dear friend of 40 years, passed away this morning at the age of 87. All he did in the same career was write “The Princess Bride” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and the screenplay for “All the President’s Men.” And that is the short list,” renowned journalist Mike Lupica posted on Twitter.
“A screenwriting god just passed away, William Goldman. His book Adventures in the Screen Trade was my first screenwriting bible. His scripts for Butch Cassidy and All the Presidents Men won Oscars. But for me The Princess Bride is his masterpiece and greatest legacy. RIP,” screenwriter Cinco Paul tweeted.
“RIP #WilliamGoldman. One of the greatest most successful screenwriters ever. I was lucky as hell to count Bill as a mentor and a friend. Check his credits & see a William Goldman movie or read a Goldman book over the holiday & give thanks that we had his voice in our world,” filmmaker Ron Howard said.
“William Goldman was huge part Of creating some of the seminal movies of the 70’s and beyond. His book on screenwriting was a touchstone for me and I always felt star struck and intimidated seeing him at Knicks games. #RESPECT,” writer-actor Ben Stiller said.
“William Goldman wrote brilliant novels, screenplays and razor-sharp takes on filmmaking. He was also a very nice man. RIP,” actor Michael McKean tweeted.
