May 7 (UPI) — A Texas woman placed an $18 bet on the Kentucky Derby at her local racecourse in San Antonio and won $1.2 million, the Retama Park Race Track announced on Friday.
The woman, who asked not to be named, correctly picked the winning horse in five Kentucky Derby races, including Justify in the main event.
“It’s extremely rare,” Rachel Bagnetto, spokeswoman for Retama Park, told ABC News. “To bet that little amount of money and win $1.2 million is unheard of. In fact, it’s the first time it’s happened at Retama.”
The woman’s winnings is almost as much as the $1.4 million in prize money won by Justify’s jockey, which will be split between trainers and owners.
