June 11 (UPI) — Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam likely will miss the start of next season after he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
The Raptors said in a statement Friday that Siakam had the surgery last week in Los Angeles. The team noted that the expected recovery and rehabilitation time for the procedure is about five months.
That timeline would mean Siakam could return in early November — about two weeks after the NBA plans to begin its 2021-22 season.
Siakam suffered the shoulder injury during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on May 8, two days after he tied his career best by scoring 44 points against the Washington Wizards. He missed the Raptors’ final four games because of the ailment.
The 27-year-old Siakam led the Raptors in scoring this season, averaging 21.4 points per game. He also paced the team in minutes (2,006) and games started (56).
Siakam, who won a championship with the Raptors in 2019, was an All-Star selection in 2020. He also was the league’s Most Improved Player in 2019.
The Raptors finished with a 27-45 record this season and failed to qualify for the NBA Play-In Tournament.
