U.S. soldier killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan

May 1 (UPI) — A U.S. soldier died this week as the result of enemy fire in northeastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Spc. Gabriel Conde, 22, of Loveland, Colo., died of small arms fire Monday in Tagab district. One other service member sustained injuries during the operation.

The Department of Defense said his death was under investigation.

Conde was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Alaska at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. His September deployment was his first.

He was part of Operation Freedom Sentinel, a mission that began in 2015 to target terrorists as part of the war in Afghanistan.

Monday was a particularly violent day in Afghanistan. At least 29 people died in the capital of Kabul in twin bombings by the Islamic State. Among the dead were eight journalists.
