US criticizes Israeli new settlement plans East Jerusalem

Washington, Oct. 2 (Petra)– Washington harshly criticized Israel’s decision to move forward with new settlements in east Jerusalem on Wednesday, adding that the plan could alienate Israel from "even its closest allies."

US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the development, which calls for more than 2,500 new settlement housing units in the area between East Jerusalem and Bethlehem, is contrary to Israel’s stated goal and it would send a very troubling message if they proceed with tenders or construction, noting that the move would "call into question Israel’s ultimate commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement."

"This development will only draw condemnation from the international community, distance Israel from even its closest allies" she added.
