PM Stefan Lofven: Sweden to recognize Palestine's statehood

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 3 (UPI) —

On his first day in office, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven announced that Sweden’s new center-left government would recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

"The conflict between Israel and Palestine can only be solved with a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law," Lofven told Parliament on Friday during his inaugural speech as prime minister.

"Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine."

If adopted by the government, Sweden will become the first European Union member to officially recognize Palestinian statehood.
