June 16 (UPI) — Alfred Finnbogason scored the first World Cup goal in Iceland history Saturday against Argentina at Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
The goal came in the 23rd minute of the Group D clash. Argentina led 1-0 at the time and the game ended in a draw.
Iceland’s Gylfi Sigurdsson had his initial shot blocked by Argentina keeper Wilfredo Caballero on the play. The ball then bounced back out to Finnbogason, who buried his attempt past Caballero with a right footed rip.
Argentina got on the board first in the 19th minute. Manchester City star Sergio Aguero bounced around the box on that play, until ripping a shot on net with his left foot, beating Iceland keeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson to the near post.
The game went into the half tied at 1-1.
Finnbogason is a 29-year-old striker for German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.
Argentina battles Croatia in another Group D match at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. Iceland takes on Nigeria in a Group D bout at 11 a.m. Friday at Volgograd Arena.
Iceland is appearing the World Cup for the first time. It is just the country’s second major international tournament appearance. Argentina has made 17 appearances at the World Cup.
