Pennsylvania Judge: New State Voter ID Law Okay

Pennsylvania Judge Robert Simpson sided with his state’s Voter ID law today.

The ACLU and others sued over this new state law, which was enacted five months ago. The law requires voters to present identification when casting ballots, which the ACLU argues is unconstitutional. The challengers sought a court order in the form of a preliminary injunction, blocking the law from going into effect before the November 6 election.

Judge Simpson denied this motion in a 70-page opinion, writing that the challengers “did not establish … that disenfranchisement [of voters] was immediate or inevitable.”

The case is expected to be appealed on an expedited schedule to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
