Bus Driver: 12-Year-Old with Romney Yard Sign Should Have Been Aborted

Monday, a Wisconsin bus driver irritated by a Romney yard sign initiated a political conversation with a middle school student she was transporting. A brief conversation ended when the driver suggested the boy should have been aborted by his mother. After an investigation, the driver was fired.

The former driver is 78 years old and worked for Durham school services which provides bus service to both public and private schools in New Berlin, Wisconsin. One of the children on the driver’s route is a 12-year-old who attends Catholic school. His home has a Romney yard sign which apparently irked the bus driver enough that he (or she) initiated a conversation about politics with the boy. When the boy responded to the taunts by noting that Obama was pro-abortion the bus driver reportedly said “Maybe your mom should have chosen abortion for you.”

The boy was understandably upset by these comments as was his mother when she learned of them. She took her complaints to the school and to the manager of the bus company. After a brief investigation the company released the following statement announcing the driver’s termination:

Durham School Services was notified by a parent on Tuesday, Oct. 9, that a bus driver in New Berlin, Wisconsin, engaged in a political debate with students the previous day and made an inappropriate remark to a child. Durham immediately removed the driver from service pending an investigation, which resulted in the termination of the driver. Prior to this incident, the driver had an incident free record while serving the community as a Durhamschool bus driver for more than 20 years. Notwithstanding, the driver’s remark was insensitive and inappropriate. Durham has apologized to the family. We remain strongly committed to the safe transportation of students in the community.

The story was brought to light by radio host Mark Belling who hosts an afternoon show in Milwaukee.
