Boxer: Climate Change Bill Coming to Floor by Summer

On Thursday, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) said she plans to bring a comprehensive climate change bill to the Senate floor by this summer.

“We’re going to go in earnest to this topic and this bill,” Boxer said of the bill sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

The legislation would try to enact a “carbon fee” the federal government would use to “invest in renewable energy, energy efficiency, job training programs and research and development.”

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the carbon fee would “generate $1.2 trillion in the next decade.”

The bill would also “require the gas drilling industry to disclose chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.”

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama threatened to use more executive orders to act on climate change if Congress did not pass legislation. Bringing the climate change bill to the Senate floor will ensure climate change issues get debated even more on the national stage.
