Four abortion clinics in Maryland have been shuttered and their doctors suspended from practice after a patient died at one clinic and regulators found problems at all four clinics. The clinics had already been shut down in March, but were allowed to reopen; they were shut down again last month after complaints about an abortifacient being given without a doctor present.
The patient who died did so after an abortion at a Baltimore clinic. She was in the care of an unlicensed medical assistant when she had cardiopulmonary arrest. No one used a defibrillator on the patient.
All the clinics are operated by Associations in OB/GYN Care, and they are affiliated with American Women’s Services, run by Dr. Steven Brigham. His license has already been suspended or revoked in five different states. He was charged with murder for late-term abortions once, but the charges were dropped. The medical director for the clinics had his license suspended in 1988 for sexual contact with patients, and again in 1995 for the same reason.
