ICE Won't Use Info About Obamacare Applicants to Enforce Immigration Laws

The Obama administration will not use information submitted about illegal immigrants by applicants signing up for Obamacare programs to enforce the country’s immigration laws. 

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) released a memo on Friday that emphasized that such information “provided during the enrollment process” will not be used “to pursue civil immigration enforcement.”

Though “people living illegally in the U.S. are barred from benefits” under Obamacare, “U.S. citizens and legal residents living with them may be eligible.” Those households are referred to as “mixed status.”

According to the memo, ICE “does not use information about such individuals or members of their household that is obtained for purposes of determining eligibility for such coverage as the basis for pursuing a civil immigration enforcement action against such individuals or members of their household.”
