On Wednesday, despite President Obama’s statements to The New Yorker earlier this week equating marijuana with alcohol, the White House maintained that its position on pot had not changed. White House press secretary Jay Carney said that Obama was merely chatting about “the disparities in the prosecution of our drug laws,” and played up Obama’s statements that he sees marijuana use as “a bad habit and a vice.”
Carney still blasted America’s drug law enforcement, stating, ‘There’s no question that we’ve applied our drug laws in a way that has been counterproductive.” Obama said that the government – which he administers – has been “locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing.”
The Department of Justice has loosened enforcement of drug laws under President Obama. Marijuana use is legal in Washington and Colorado.
