Documents: Tanning Salons Inspected More Often Than NYC Abortion Clinics

On April 7th the New York Post reported that documents show New York City’s “tanning salons [are] inspected more regularly than abortion clinics.”

According to the Post, the documents show that “health inspectors regulate 25 diagnostic and treatment centers and surgery centers that provide abortion services.”

Of these 25, “eight were never inspected” between 2000 and 2012, “five were inspected just once, and eight were inspected only once, twice, or three times” during the 12 year period.

By contrast, “city eateries are inspected every year and graded,” and the law requires that tanning salons be inspected annually.

The Chiaroscuro Foundation filed a Freedom of Information Act request to gain more information on the abortion clinic inspections. In response, the state Health Department “noted it inspects only a limited number of abortion providers,” and certain providers fall outside its purview because they “are not required to have ‘abortion services’ in their operating certificates in order to perform abortions.”
