Tennessee House Nixes Senate Bill Allowing Open Carry of Firearms Without Permit

On April 14th a Tennessee House committee voted 10 to 1 against a senate bill which would have allowed the open carry of firearms without a license.

According to Nashville Public Radio, state representative Micah Van Huss (R) sponsored the bill, onto which opponents added an exorbitant price tag following the April 8th passage of the senate version. Van Huss believed “someone was trying to kill his bill.”

To get around the price tag, he was determined to “[invoke] what’s called Rule 53”–a rule which would guarantee his bill a “decisive vote.”

But the added price tag was eventually dropped and the committee simply voted the bill down. 

Van Huss said his bill “got a fair shake before it was voted down, so he won’t force the open carry issue any further this year.”
