On May 7th, Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre (D) told the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida that he would like to see an “assault weapons” ban and “regulation of private gun sales”–especially those sales “which often take place at gun shows.”
Manfre is one of only four elected Democrats in Flagler county.
According to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Manfre described an “assault weapons” ban as “sensible gun control.”
He added, “In my opinion, there is no reason to have an assault weapon,” and he suggested that the continued availability of these weapons threatens to drive up the number of officers killed each year.
On April 7th, Breitbart News highlighted a study by Quinnipiac University’s Mark Gius, which showed that “murder rates were 19.3 percent higher when the federal [‘assault weapons’] ban (AWB) was in effect.”
Manfre also said he supports a bigger “database for background checks that includes alcoholics and mentally ill people, who voluntarily commit themselves to institutions or rehab centers.”
