OK Lawmakers Pass Bill Expanding Concealed Carry to School Parking Lots

On May 15th, the Oklahoma House voted 83 to 6 to pass HB 2614, which expands concealed carry to cover “guns inside a locked vehicle” in school parking lots.

According to Guns.com, one of the bill’s sponsors,  state Senator Greg Treat (R), said he thinks many concealed carry permit holders probably keep a gun in their car when they pull onto the school lot and “unsuspectingly committing a felony.”

He said the law needs to change to keep law-abiding citizens from being in such a situation. “We are a very pro-Second Amendment state. We’re a very pro-self-defense state. We don’t need to create unnecessary barriers for people to protect themselves.”

In March, Breitbart News reported that Indiana Governor Mike Pence (R) made a similar argument for signing a law allowing concealed carry permit holders to keep guns in school parking lots in his state.

Pence said the law reform “accomplishes the goal of keeping parents and law-abiding citizens from being charged with a felony when they pick their kids up at school or go to cheer on the local basketball team.”

The bill expanding concealed carry to cover guns locked in cars in Oklahoma school parking lots now moves to the Oklahoma state Senate.
