At a Wednesday Christian Science Monitor breakfast, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said he was still “a fan” of comprehensive amnesty legislation even though he was pessimistic about Congress and the White House ever agreeing on a bill.
“You know that I’m a fan of immigration reform. I’ve been in favor of immigration reform for many, many years,” he said, according to The Wall Street Journal. “But having said all that, there is just no confidence or faith that the president will discharge his duties in executing and implementing the laws as written by Congress at this time.”
Ryan said, “We need to deal narrowly with the border crisis” by passing the House’s border bill, which does not prevent President Barack Obama from enacting or funding his threatened executive amnesty.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) has called Ryan his “ally” in his quest to legalize all of the country’s illegal immigrants. Ryan also reportedly worked to corral support for Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart’s (R-FL) amnesty bill, which would potentially have enabled Republicans to bring it to the floor and then vote against the bill, allowing it to pass with support from Democrats. As Breitbart News reported, Ryan also refused to disavow going to conference with the Senate on the Senate’s amnesty bill last year, even after House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) denounced such efforts.
