Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) lawyer disavowed a super PAC that formed to draft Warren to run for president in 2016.
The Ready for Warren PAC has had a presence at left-wing conferences like Netroots Nation, but Warren’s lawyer, according to CNN, wrote the Federal Election Commission on Friday stating “this organization will focus its attention and energy on maintaining Democratic control of the U.S. Senate and not confuse donors about a non-existent run for President.”
“The senator has not, and does not, explicitly or implicitly, authorize, endorse, or otherwise approve of the organization’s formation or activities,” attorney Marc Elias reportedly wrote. “To the contrary, Senator Warren has publicly announced that she is not running for president in 2016.”
However, Erica Sagrans, the campaign manager for the PAC, told CNN that they would continue “with our campaign to draft Elizabeth Warren to run for president in 2016 because we believe she’s the best person for the job.”
“We’ve all been clear since we launched our campaign that Senator Warren isn’t associated with our group, and we aren’t associated with the senator,” she reportedly said.
Warren has been encouraged to run by grassroots activists and Occupy Wall Street sympathizers who feel that Hillary Clinton is too centrist and tied to crony capitalism. Warren, though, has repeatedly said that she will not run in 2016, but she has declined to say whether Hillary Clinton would be the party’s best nominee. Clinton has not disavowed the similarly named “Ready for Hillary” group.
