The Latino Victory Project: Executive Action Can 'Refocus Efforts' on Immigration Reform in Congress

With President Obama expected to announce some kind of executive action on immigration at the end of the summer, the Latino Victory Project – a PAC recently launched by actress Eva Longoria – is hopeful that such a move will provide legal status for undocumented immigrants.

According to Cristobal Alex, president of the Latino Victory Project, if Obama moves forward with legalization, the group hopes it will help get more movement behind immigration reform in Congress.

“Though details of his plan remain unknown, we hope he will provide legal status and relief from deportation along with work authorization, modeled after the protections in Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), to those that have resided in the United States and are a part of our families, community and economy,” Alex said in a statement to Breitbart News Monday evening. “More importantly, we hope this will refocus efforts on formulating a solution towards comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.”

Alex explained that the Latino community believes “action on immigration is urgently needed” and that President Obama would be right to take action unilaterally.

“For years, particularly around election cycles, we have heard empty promises by some about a legislative fix to this broken system. Earlier this year, we were hopeful that a bi-partisan compromise would be brokered by Congress that benefited our community, but that just didn’t happen,” he continued. “The Senate passed a bipartisan bill, and Republican Leadership in the House failed to move forward. The President is well within his right to take executive action and begin the process of modernizing our immigration system. It is the right thing to do, and it is to the benefit of our country as a whole.”

Monday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters “we’ll probably have some news to make on immigration” at the end of the summer.

Reports have indicated Obama is considering taking unilateral action to provide legal status to as many as five million undocumented immigrants.
