With the 2014 midterm elections less than two months away, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) says President Obama “stumbled” on the Islamic State, and his mishandling of the terror group is “bound to have some impact” on the coming elections.
According to Politico Pro, Durbin said Obama “stumbled at the outset” on ISIS.
And in reference to Obama’s late August admission that he did not have strategy for combating ISIS, Durbin said: “That was very poorly handled. I think he knows it. I think the speech [on September 10] is to clarify that we have a strategy and that we have allies in the effort.”
Another Democrat Senator said Obama’s failure to “deal with the unrest in Syria” in 2013 gave rise to ISIS in 2014.
The GOP is seizing on Obama’s “feckless response to Islamic State militants.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is running a commercial describing these as “serious times,” and Senate candidate Scott Brown (R-NH) is calling Obama a “failure” on foreign policy.
Senate candidate Joni Ernst (R-IA) has been speaking to veterans about Obama’s “inability or unwillingness to present a strategy aimed at eradicating the growing threat” of ISIS.
On August 19, Breitbart News reported that ISIS released a video warning to Americans in which they said: “We will drown you all in blood.” And on August 22 Breitbart News reported a tweet that hinted at an ISIS threat against Chicago. The text of tweet said: “We are in your state, We are in your cities, We are in your streets.” It also contained a photograph of a piece of paper being held in the front of the Old Republic Building in Chicago. On the paper was written: “Soldiers from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Will Pass From Here Soon.”
Durbin thinks Obama “will clarify” a strategy against ISIS during his speech on September 10.
