The Dead in New Jersey Get Welfare Benefits

An audit of New Jersey’s food stamp program has discovered that dozens of dead people are still being awarded benefits.

The report issued by the state auditor reviewed New Jersey’s county-administered food stamp program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and while the program is reportedly operating well, the report found that dead people were still getting benefits.

By May, for instance, 37 people who had passed away in 2013 were still on the rolls receiving benefits.

The report also found that 66 people who won at least $10,000 in the state lottery were still getting SNAP assistance. One had even won $1,000 a week for life but was still on SNAP.
