On Monday, Mets fans booed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio at the team’s home opener as soon as his presence was announced during the pre-game activities. The mayor was booed last year before he threw out the first pitch at the team’s opener. He had noted last year that it was 45 degrees at Citi Field and said, “I think everyone’s going to be too cold to respond.” He was booed anyway.
This year, it didn’t even matter that he didn’t throw out the first pitch. One fan still yelled, “Stop inviting him!”
De Blasio, a Red Sox fan, wore a Mets cap and jersey with “DE BLASIO” on the back, but the number 6 on the uniform was a tribute to 1960’s shortstop-third baseman Rico Petrocelli, who played his entire twelve-year career with the Bosox, amassing 210 home runs.
One fan said bitterly to the New York Daily News, “I’ve lived in New York all my life. I’m tired of giving away my tax money. I’ve seen the changes in the city. He’s too liberal.”
Politico pointed out in December that white New Yorkers disapproved of de Blasio by a nearly two-to-one margin in public polling.
