During the January 7 CNN gun control town hall, President Obama mocked Americans who are concerned that the executive expansion of background checks will be followed by an executive push for gun confiscation.

Obama referred to fears of confiscation as “imaginary fiction” pushed by the NRA.

According to the Associated Press, Anderson Cooper pointed out that many Americans are worried “‘that the federal government–and Obama in particular–wants to seize all guns.” Obama responded, “That is a conspiracy. I’m only going to be here for another year. When would I have started on this enterprise?”

CNN published the text of the gun control town hall, and the text shows that gun control proponent Mark Kelly spoke from the audience about confiscation as well, and he did so in a way that opened concerned Americans up for derision.

He recalled testifying for gun control “in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee” after Sandy Hook and said “we heard not only from the gun lobby, but from United States Senators that expanding background checks will, not may, [but] will lead to a registry, which will lead to confiscation, which will lead to a tyrannical government.”

Kelly then looked at Obama and delivered the punchline, “I would like you to explain with 350 million guns in 65 million places, households, from Key West, to Alaska, 350 million objects in 65 million places, if the Federal government wanted to confiscate those objects, how would they do that?”

Kelly provided Obama with the information he needed to not-so-subtly mock Americans who expect federal agents to knock on their doors and collect all guns.

Kelly’s statements made such a scenario seem like so much work–what with so many guns scattered across the country–that even the thought of it is laughable. But many concerned Americans believe that Obama just found a way to sidestep the laborious work of convincing Congress to go along with gun control and instead picked up his pen and went it alone, short-cutting the system and quickly placing more gun control on the backs of law-abiding citizens. So what is to keep Obama from picking up that pen again and instituting registration requirements, which will most certainly bring us closer to the confiscation Kelly and Obama laughed about?
